16 Year Old California Girl Sentenced to Life in Prison Without Parole, for Killing her Pimp. SIGN HER PETITION!

Sara Kruzan was just 13 years old when she was raped by her then future pimp. She was put on the street as a prostitute working from 6pm to 5:30 am. This continued until one day, at 16 years old, she killed her pimp.

The judge tried her as an adult in California and sentenced her to life in prison without parole. I know killing is wrong. Should there be a punishment for the crime of murder, yes I believe so. But it is inexcusable to try her as an adult and then sentence her to life without parole. She was a child in desperate need of help. Now she will die in prison.

Listen to her story.

YOU CAN HELP!
SIGN THESE PETITIONS FOR SARA KRUZAN

I don't know if anything will come of these petitions, BUT I WILL NOT be silent. She needs to know that we heard her story and that we care.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

COMING SOON: New AbolitionistJB Website

I've mentioned it before, but here's the first design mockup of my new abolitionistjb.com website. It's going to be a hub for abolitionist news, information, charities, events and most importantly, ways you can get involved.

My favorite feature is the events calendar. People and organizations can submit their abolitionst events. Then everyone can search by country and state to find events in their area.

Take a look and let me know what you think. Thanks!

Click the image to see it full size.
There's still quite a bit of work to do, but I'm hoping to have it up by the end of April. Stay tuned for more details.

AUTHOR'S INVITATION:

Everyone I talk to about modern slavery agrees it's atrocious. Then they ask, "What can I do?" BE A VOICE. Spread awareness by sharing these posts and videos with others. HOUSTON -- A Houston man is the first person in the Southern District of Texas to be charged in federal court with sex trafficking of a minor, KHOU.com's Jeff McShan reported.

Barry Davis, who was arrested in July by a federal task force, is on trial in a Houston court.

It's a problem that has become an epidemic around the country.

“American teenagers are being forced into sex trafficking on a daily basis and it’s not about the money in those situations,” said Maria Trujillo with Houston Rescue and Restore. “These are just young girls looking for love, attention, and affection.”

Trujillo says the teenagers are manipulated by so-called "pimps" who force them to work as prostitutes.

“In these horrible situations where they're turning tricks 10-to-15 Johns a night,” she said.

In Federal Court Tuesday 11 News learned that Davis allegedly met a 16-year-old high school student in Pasadena after she got off her school bus. Prosecutors say she decided to run away with him.

Davis allegedly took the girl and two others from Texas to New Jersey, New York, Missouri, Illinois, Louisiana, and Washington D.C., coercing them into having sex with strangers.

An FBI agent testified that Davis used the Web site EROS.com to advertise their services. It was his way to make money.

Evidence presented in court Tuesday included photographs of his girls and a chalice known to be carried by pimps.

Davis went by the name Sir Lewis and it was engraved into the chalice.

The 16-year-old girl involved in this case is being treated as a victim.

In fact, the task force, which includes the Houston Police Department, says that in the last five years it has rescued more than 100 girls from lives of prostitution.

“Houston is a hub for human trafficking in the United States and we really need to bring awareness to the community about this issue if we ever want to bring an end to modern day slavery,” Trujillo said.

If convicted, Davis could spend the rest of his life in prison.

Dateline News Report with Anne Curry - Children for Sale

In this Dateline news report with Anne Curry, The Dateline team investigates child sex slavery in Cambodia. This is a problem worldwide, but Cambodia is one of the worst places for child sex slavery. Creating more problems is the fact that predators from foreign countries, such as the USA, travel to Cambodia to have sex with children.

Dateline's investigation has helped put some of these predators in jail and helped give these children a voice.

PROJECT AK47: No More Child Soldiers

Child slavery in all forms is heinous and evil, but especially when it involves child soldiers. Guerilla armies and drug cartels will take children, train them to kill, and then send them to the battlefield.

Instead of a childhood full of love and learning, these children, boys and girls as young as 5, receive a childhood filled with the death and horrors of war.

PROJECT AK47 is working to protect these children and free them from military life in Asia. With over 100,000 child soldiers in Asia, their work is beyond admirable and you can learn how to help by visiting their website www.projectak47.com.

Child soldiers are largely found in Asia and Africa, but the problem exists worldwide. Look for future posts with more information about the groups fighting this evil and ways you can help them.

CNN SPECIAL REPORT: Helping Haiti's Child Slaves by Dr. Sanjay Gupta

Dr. Sanjay Gupta did this special CNN report in December 2009. It sheds light on the problems of child domestic slavery in Haiti.

QUESTIONS TO PONDER:
How will the devastation of the earthquake affect child slavery in Haiti?
Will the system be rebuilt alongside the buildings, homes and governement?
Who will protect the thousands of displaced and orphaned children?
What can we do?

These are all questions I don't have answers to. I do know that awareness and fundraising is key, but it's equally critical for the Haitian government and people to build a system that will protect these children in correlation to building a new infrastructure.

This opportunity is the silver lining available to the Haitian people after such a tragic loss. There's no better time than now to make the changes necessary, and with the aid and watchful eye of dozens of other countries, hopefully this will take place. My heart and prayers go out to them.

Mimi Chakarova: Sex Slavery from the Inside

Momentum and Tides

Mimi bravely posed as a prostitute trying to get a job in Istanbul brothels. She went places no one else could and took many pictures and videos undercover. She says this is her last undercover story because she can't go back. The mafias know who she is and it's too dangerous.

Mimi Chakarova was born in Bulgaria and immigrated to Baltimore at age 13. Later, when she traveled back to Bulgaria, she learned that many of her friends, had been trafficked to other countries as teenagers to become sex slaves.
