Short Documentary: Human Trafficking in the Philippines

This is a short documentary is co-sponsored by UNICEF and discusses the growing problem of human trafficking in the Philippines. It's only 7 minutes long and provides another learning experience as we combat modern slavery.

PBS Story on one of my Heroes, Somaly Mam

Somaly Mam is truly one of my heroes. After all she has survived and endured, she continues to give back by helping shut down brothels in South Asia and provide aftercare treatments for girls that have been sexually exploited. Some of these girls are as young as 5. It's heartbreaking, but her story gives me hope.

You can learn more about Somaly Mam from an earlier post we did with her on the Tyra Banks show. If you get a chance, I highly suggest reading her book, "The Road of Lost Innocence." You can hear the story of survivors first-hand and feel the hope she brings in fighting the evil of child sex slavery.

Interview with a Trafficker- Stories from a former child slave trafficker.

This interview takes place with a former child sex trafficker from South Africa. For his protection, his identity is kept hidden. This interview provides insight to the mindset of traffickers, their methods and their treatment of slaves.

He also goes into how the Thai and South African mafias started planning to traffick more girls for the 2010 World Cup. If enough girls are not brought in, then local kidnapping will increase.

The "Generate Hope" organization builds a Safe House for survivors of child sex slavery in San Diego

I recently came across the Generate Hope organization through my Google News feed on the right side of the blog.

They did an interview on KPBS radio, along with San Diego Police Detective James Hunter, talking about sex trafficking in San Diego and their new San Diego Safe House. This Safe House helps protect, mend and restore the lives of child sex slave survivors. The video below shares the startling statistics of modern slavery and provides more information about Generate Hope.
